Belgium is on the verge of dividing up along Wallon (french speaking) and Flemish (Dutch speaking) terms. The only thing holding France and Germany together is the fear that neither would survive a nuclear exchange between the two countries should another of their usual wars pop up. And if it weren't for NATO (i.e. the US military), the Russians would be knocking on the Baltic States and Eastern Europe's door once again. Btw, nobody likes the eastern Europeans. Brits, Spaniards and Italians all complain about immigrants from Poland, Buglaria and Romania. And NOBODY over there wants Turkey to be a part of the EU.

And, the most damning evidence of all, during the Balkan conflict of the '90s, when war threatened to engulf Greece and Turkey, Europeans did nothing. The Dutch presence there was downright shameful. The situation didn't get resolved until American bombs began to fall on Serbian cities.

In short, Europe is a mess. They'll never have a government as (relatively) cohesive as the one in the US.
